This end of the lake asks more of a dock than the narrows do, and the repairs reflect it.
Fetch is the distance wind travels over open water before it reaches you. North of the narrows there is a great deal of it, and that is why two docks of identical construction age at different rates depending on which way they face. A structure taking a mile of built-up chop is doing far more work per season than one tucked behind a point.
On heavily worked docks the timber usually outlasts the connections holding it together. Bolts elongate their holes, brackets loosen, and the frame develops a small amount of play. That play is what turns ordinary wave action into progressive damage, because every wave now moves the structure slightly instead of being absorbed by it.
Repairing the obvious failure on a dock that has developed play tends to relocate the problem rather than solve it. Once a structure is moving, the next weakest connection becomes the next repair. The useful assessment is where the movement starts, not where the damage shows.
New movement is the single most useful symptom to report. It means a connection or a piling has lost its grip, and unlike cosmetic wear it compounds, because the structure now flexes with every wave instead of resisting it.
Often, provided the rest is not already moving. If the frame has play in it, an isolated repair usually buys a season before the adjacent connection goes.
